Venango Blind Association to hold virtual White Cane events

From staff reports

The Venango County Association for the Blind is planning some virtual events today to mark the annual observance of White Cane Day.

The Blind Association is conducting the activities in conjunction with the Cranberry Area Lions and the Oil Valley Chapter of the Pennsylvania Council of the Blind. The Blind Association is also recognizing October as Blindness Awareness Month.

The groups will celebrate the White Cane as a symbol of a blind or visually impaired person’s ability to achieve a full and independent life, according to Krysta Carson, executive director of the Venango County Association for the Blind.

Carson said anyone who wants to participate in today’s virtual engagements on Facebook can go to www.facebook.com/venangocountyblindassociation throughout the day.

“Though COVID-19 has put a damper on group celebrations, we feel it is still important to educate people about vision loss and to showcase the talents and abilities of people who are blind or vision impaired,” said Carson. “Additionally, we hope to reach people who are experiencing vision loss so they will know how to access the resources that will enable them to acquire the skills, tools, and services necessary to maintain an independent lifestyle,” Carson added.
