Sugarcreek Council OKs 417 tank work

From staff reports

A water tank in Sugarcreek Borough will receive some much needed love this year.

Borough council members voted at their meeting Wednesday to accept a proposal for maintenance work on the tank from Mid-Atlantic Storage Systems of Washington, Ohio. The cost of the work will be $69,664.

“It needs maintenance,” borough manager Joe Sporer told council.

Sporer said the tank on Route 417 will need maintenance this year or the borough will face buying a new tank, which he said would cost about $1 million.

The tank was installed by Mid-Atlantic in 2006.

Before council’s vote, Sporer explained that because the tank only needs routine maintenance, the project did not need to be advertised for bidding.

Councilman John McClelland asked Sporer if he thought there would be a chance of a lower price if the project were to be advertised, and Sporer said engineers involved in the project related that the price offered by Mid-Atlantic was “a good price.”

Sporer said the tank has 14,600 exterior bolts and is classified as a glass-lined tank, making it a very specialized project.

The borough manager said doing this maintenance would buy the borough another 12 to 15 years before any more work would need to be done.

The project’s cost will come out of an account set aside specifically for the tank. That money is accounted for in the 2019 budget.
