Rocky Grove baseball champions will be honored in Harrisburg

Field trips, teacher conferences and extracurriculars were on the agenda for Valley Grove School Board members at their work session Monday.

The board was told that members of the state champion Rocky Grove High School baseball team will travel to Harrisburg on Oct. 15 to be recognized at the State Capital Building.

“We hope that many of the graduated seniors will attend too,” Superintendent Kevin Briggs said, but he noted it could be hard for the graduates between university classes and work schedules.

Briggs also mentioned that the school is still looking into pricing for championship jackets for the team.

Another notable trip that has been planned is an outing to the Barrow Civic Theatre for a musical production of “Treasure Island” to be taken by the junior high music students.

After some discussion regarding the $4 admission price for the students and how it should be paid, Briggs said the matter would be looked into before next week’s meeting.

In other business, several purpose statements and officers were approved for clubs and activities, but board president Melanie Anderson noted that there were a number of repeated names among student officers.

Anderson proposed that next school year a policy limiting the number of offices held by one student should be installed, saying it would give other students the opportunity to be in a position of leadership.

The board also talked about the budget for a trip Briggs and some board members will take to Hershey in October.

Anderson, Todd Carson, Joane Beach and Nichole McGill will join Briggs at the Pennsylvania School Boards Association School Leadership Conference for three days. The collective budget totals $6,182.21.

“There’s so much you can see and do,” Swendsen said in praise of the conference.

The district’s regular monthly meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday.
