PPC plans Walk a Mile event, self-defense classes in April

From staff reports

The PPC Violence Free Network of Family Service and Children’s Aid Society is hosting three self-defense classes in April in observance of Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

In addition, the PPC Network’s fifth annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event is set for Sunday, April 29, in Franklin’s Fountain Park. The walk encourages men to literally walk one mile in women’s shoes to raise awareness of sexual assault.

The self-defense classes are free and open to the public. Participants must be 18 or older or accompanied by an adult if they are a minor.

The classes are scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, at the Oil City YWCA gymnasium (registration at 3:30 p.m.), 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 5, in the Oil City YMCA aerobics studio (registration at 5:30 p.m.) and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 28, at the Franklin YMCA aerobics studio (registration at 10:30 a.m.)

Registration for the April 29 Walk a Mile in Her Shoes begins at 2:30 p.m. that day in Fountain Park. There will be speakers at 3 p.m., and the march will follow.

The featured speaker will be Crystal Patterson, the PPC Network program director and a survivor of domestic violence.

Prizes will be awarded for best shoe, best catwalk and team spirit.

Registration cost is $15, and teams of five or more people are $12 per person

Children 12 and under are free, and youth shirts can be ordered for $10.

Registration can also be done prior to the walk, and anyone who registers before April 2 will receive a T-shirt.

PPC is also offering sponsorship opportunities for the event.

Kiyomi Knox, a counselor and advocate for the PPC Network, is the coordinator for the Walk a Mile event and the self-defense classes.
