Police fatally shoot man in case involving chainsaw

From staff reports

A Union City man was fatally shot by undercover state troopers during a controlled purchase of a stolen chainsaw on Wednesday afternoon, and Franklin state police are involved in the case.

State police in Erie said Keith Hawley, 27, was pronounced dead at the scene after he was shot while brandishing a handgun in an attempt to rob the undercover troopers.

Police said they contacted Hawley to arrange a purchase of the suspected stolen chainsaw that he had posted online.

After Hawley was shot, troopers administered first aid and called emergency medical services, but Hawley succumbed to the injury, police said.

Franklin state police Sgt. James Weaver is assigned to lead the death investigation. Erie County District Attorney protocol requires officers from outside the involved troopers’ jurisdiction to investigate the shooting.

The involved troopers have been placed on administrative leave, which is state police protocol for officers involved in shootings. The investigation is ongoing.

A second man, Robert Hull, 30, of Erie, was charged in the incident. According to court documents, Hull was charged with conspiracy to commit robbery and placed in Erie County Prison, unable to post bail.
