Pleasantville home badly damaged by fire; no one injured

A soldering iron could be to blame for a fire that gutted the interior of a Pleasantville residence Wednesday, according to fire crews.

“(The home owner) said he’d been soldering in the basement but the cause of the fire is still being determined,” Pleasantville fire chief Randy Wescoat said.

The blaze at 22887 Shamburg Road was called in by the homeowner at about 4:50 p.m., Wescoat said.

The man was able to escape the residence unharmed, according to Wescoat.

The home’s second occupant wasn’t home at the time of the fire, and there were no animals known to be in the home, Cornplanter assistant chief Troy McGregor said.

Wescoat said the fire had been 80 percent contained by 5:30 p.m., but the home is a “total loss.”

Pleasantville firefighters were assisted at the scene by Cornplanter, Titusville, Cherrytree and Hydetown fire departments as well as EmergyCare Ambulance.
