One-day archaeological dig at Pithole unearths some items

Staff from Drake Well Museum and the Pennsylvania Historic and Museum Commission conducted an archaeological dig at Pithole, a former oil boom town, as a training exercise. They identified the location of Murphy’s Theater, a key 1860s venue, and unearthed various small items. This dig served as an educational opportunity for museum staff and interns, shedding light on the historic town that rapidly grew and vanished within a few years due to fires and oil price collapses.
