OC man charged for having deceased man’s documents

From staff reports

An Oil City man is facing charges after he was found in possession of identifying documents belonging to a recently deceased man.

Franklin police said they were called on Aug. 2 to a Liberty Street apartment for a suspected trespasser. Police said they had recently removed a body from the apartment.

Police said they found Benjamin Joseph Kachik, 36, inside the apartment where he had barricaded himself. Police said Kachik was taken into custody and searched where they found the deceased man’s birth certificate, Social Security card, fishing license and “accompanying documents.”

Kachik was also found to be in possession of a bottle of prescription pills that did not belong to him at a subsequent interview, police said.

He was charged with two felony counts of identity theft, a misdemeanor count of possession of a controlled substance and three misdemeanor counts of theft by unlawful taking of movable property.

Kachik remains lodged in the Venango County jail on $2,500 bail, and a preliminary hearing is scheduled Wednesday in Central Court.
