OC man arrested on weapons charges

An Oil City man who is also a convicted felon was arrested Wednesday on weapons charges.

Ruben Craig, 36, was charged after a search warrant was executed shortly before noon Wednesday at his home at 110 Walnut St., Oil City police said.

Police said they recovered a semi-automatic handgun and a shotgun during the search. They said an investigation into the ownership of the firearms is continuing.

Craig was charged with a felony count of possession of a prohibited firearm and a misdemeanor count of persons not to possess, use, manufacture, control, sell or transfer firearms.

He was placed in the Venango County jail after failing to post $7,000 cash bail. A preliminary hearing has been tentatively scheduled for Wednesday in Venango County Central Court.

Craig was found guilty by an Erie County jury of a felony court of aggravated assault following a trial in 2004 and is therefore not permitted to possess firearms.

Oil City police chief Bob Wenner said officers had received information there could be firearms at Craig’s residence, and they were able to confirm that through an investigation.

“We were able to collaborate that firearms had been moved into the residence,” Wenner said.
