OC firefighters to hit the streets for Coats for Kids

Members of Oil City Firefighters Local 700 will collect donations along city streets Thursday for the annual Coats For Kids drive to help area youngsters in need of winter coats.

In 2014, the program was expanded to the Cranberry School District. Last year, in the third year of the campaign, the firefighters added Valley Grove School District to the campaign’s service area.

Last year’s campaign brought in $17,000, and the donations led to the purchase of about 500 coats, said John Horn, an Oil City firefighter and chairman of the effort. Over the course of the campaigns, the fire department has collected and distributed almost $60,000 worth of coats.

Horn said the new coats the firefighters provide to the children are 100 percent American-made and that all money donated goes toward the coats.

Donations can be made by check, money order, cash or online on the fire department’s Facebook page.

The mailing address is Oil City Firefighters Local 700, 404 Central Ave., Oil City. Online donations can be made at donate.operationwarm.org/page/contribute/oil-city.
