OC awarded grant for school security upgrades

Oil City School Board members were told Monday by Superintendent Lynda Weller that the school district has been awarded a $25,000 grant for upgrades to building security throughout the district.

The plan, approved by the school board in August, includes updating cameras in the elementary school buildings, adding cameras to the high school/middle school and adding keyless entry to the doors of each building.

The project was awarded to Johnson Controls for a total cost of $234,138.

The grant comes through the PA Commission on Crime and Delinquency.

In other business at Monday’s school board work session, the district is requesting the board’s approval for a revision of the child abuse policy to bring it up to date with current mandated reporting laws.

“The last revision was in July of 1996, and the mandated reporting laws have changed,” Weller said.

The board will take action at next Monday’s voting meeting.

Weller acknowledged several student accomplishments, including cross country runners Lauren Bortzer and Olivia Mumford who competed for states, as well as the Oilers football team for its District 10 championship.

Weller acknowledged the following students who were selected for 2019 district chorus: Courtney Crabtree, Lindsey Crabtree, Lorin DeGroat, Alex Dobson, Korey Felmlee, Katie Fye, Layla Hollis, Brandon Huff, Shanay Jackson, Josh Masters and Cassidy Webb.

Weller also acknowledged Steve Luxbacher for being selected as one of 16 music teachers in the country to participate in a study group of a new teaching methodology sponsored by the National Association for Music Education.

The board is scheduled to vote on several personnel matters, including the resignation of paraprofessional Lori Moore, who has taken a position outside the school district.

Weller said another paraprofessional is bidding on Moore’s job. If approved, this will open a position at Smedley Street Elementary School.

The board will vote on approving Emily Pfendler as a long-term substitute teacher for first grade at Hasson Heights for the remainder of the school year.

The board will also vote on approving Nadia Mangiantini as a day-to-day substitute teacher; Kimberly Bennett and Kristen Vensel as guest teachers and Linda Fletcher as a day-to-day substitute paraprofessional.

The board will vote on the following supplemental contracts: Jeff Brown, musical director and musical set designer; Dan Cartwright, musical advisor; and Mary Beth Hutchinson, musical accompanist.

Additional supplemental contracts are pending security clearances and will be added to January’s agenda, Weller said.

This month’s voting meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday at the administration building at 825 Grandview Road.
