Man jailed after standoff that began with bow-and-arrow

NEW KENSINGTON (AP) – A western Pennsylvania man has been jailed in a standoff that police say began when he used a bow-and-arrow to shoot at his neighbor’s barking dogs.

New Kensington police say 54-year-old Dean Kestner didn’t injure the dogs, but he did escalate the situation by going back into his house and grabbing a shotgun, which he then used to threaten the dogs’ owners.

The incident began about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and didn’t end until Kestner left his home and was tackled by members of a state police emergency response team called in the local police. New Kensington is about 20 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, along the Allegheny River.

Online court records don’t list an attorney for Kestner, who faces a June 9 hearing on reckless endangerment, terroristic threat and assault charges.
