A Clintonville firefighter assisted in apprehending a driver who fled the scene of a two-vehicle crash after he drove east in the westbound lanes of Interstate 80 before striking a pickup truck.

Clintonville fire chief Gerry Rea said his department was dispatched around 8:30 p.m. Friday for a crash about a mile east of Exit 35.

Gerry’s son Grant, who is the assistant chief, was on his way to the scene when he spotted the driver fleeing on foot.

“My son Grant saw a guy walking on the eastbound lane about a mile from the accident,” Gerry Rea said. “He jumped out with a flare in his hand and told the guy to freeze and stay there.”

Soon after Grant confronted the man, Gerry Rea said, Franklin state police quickly arrived and took the man into custody.

Gerry Rea said that neither the driver nor the passenger of the pickup truck sustained injuries. The driver of the car had minor injuries, Gerry Rea said.

“It’s very fortunate that was the only vehicle that got hit,” Gerry Rea said. “It’s fortunate there wasn’t a pile of cars there or a semi.”

Police confirmed the man was taken into custody. Charges are pending the results of blood alcohol testing.

Emlenton Ambulance assisted at the scene, which was cleared around 9:45 p.m.
