EDINBORO (AP) – A man has been sentenced to 15 to 40 years in prison in the shooting death of a friend outside an off-campus apartment complex near Edinboro University.
The Erie Times-News reports that 22-year-old Trey Gunter was sentenced Tuesday after pleading guilty to third-degree murder in the November 2014 death of 22-year-old Tobiah Johnson.
Gunter apologized to family and friends of the victim and himself as well as a woman who witnessed the shooting near Edinboro University. He said “I’ve taken my friend’s life and I can’t change that.”
Prosecutors said Gunter took the law into his own hands over a gun stolen in a burglary. The shooting triggered a four-hour lockdown of the campus.
