Man charged for threatening mother, making explosive devices

A Kennerdell man has been charged with threatening his mother and making two homemade explosive devices.

Franklin state police said in a criminal complaint they responded Tuesday morning to a residence in Kennerdell where they found that Kenneth Sterner, 33, had engaged in a verbal argument with his mother. Police said Sterner also brandished a knife at his mother and threatened her.

Sterner told her “snitches get stitches” and refused to let her leave the wooden shed they were in, the complaint said.

Sterner was said to have a white plastic bag in his hands prior to running from the property, according to the complaint.

Police found the bag in a pile of logs near the residence, the complaint said. The bag contained two “homemade explosive devices” made of cardboard with OSB wood hot glued to the ends and ignition fuses in the middle of the devices, according to the complaint.

Police also observed a hot glue gun and a sheet of OSB wood with circular holes missing that matched the end caps of the explosive devices found in the bag, the complaint said.

After receiving consent to enter the house, police found a jar of marijuana as well as drug paraphernalia belonging to Sterner in plain view, the complaint said.

Sterner described to police the proper way to blow up a stump with explosives and admitted to having wicks and gunpowder in a cabinet under his bed, the complaint said.

He was charged with felony counts of aggravated assault- attempts to cause or causes bodily injury with a deadly weapon and risking catastrophe, and misdemeanor counts of terroristic threats, recklessly endangering another person, false imprisonment, unlawful restraint/involuntary servitude, simple assault, make repairs/sell/etc offensive weapon, possession of a controlled substance and use/possession of drug paraphernalia.

He was placed in the Venango County jail with bail denied due to him being considered “a harm to himself and others.”

His preliminary hearing is scheduled Wednesday in Central Court.
