Likely buyer found for Franklin fluoride monitors

The Franklin General Authority has found a likely buyer for its two online fluoride monitors.

The monitors, no longer needed after citywide fluoridation services were terminated in June, were approved for purchase by the Meadville Area Water Authority at that panel’s Wednesday meeting.

Franklin city manager Tracy Jamieson said the transaction still requires approval by the Franklin General Authority at its Nov. 13 meeting, noting that the decision is not yet official.

“It still has to go to the General Authority for them to OK it, and I think they will,” Jamieson said.

The monitors, which have never been used, would be purchased for $10,000 along with fluoride reagent.

Jamieson said they had originally been bought for around $6,800 each.

Fluoridation services were terminated in Franklin following a leak in February that allowed excessive amounts of the chemical into the water of residents in the Third Ward, Rocky Grove and Oak Hill.

The Meadville Area Water Authority approved fluoridation services in June 2017, making it the only municipality in the northwest region to carry fluoride in its water.

Jamieson said authority members will first discuss the transaction at their committee meeting Oct. 25.
