Improvements on tap at 2 OC rec facilities

Two public recreational venues in Oil City are getting spruced up.

The Oil Valley Disc Golf Society received permission from city council on Thursday to improve the nine-year-old disc golf course in Hasson Park.

The course offers a game similar to traditional golf except that players use a Frisbee-like disc that is thrown from a tee to a target that is in an elevated wire basket.

Caleb Carrow, chairman of the disc golf program, said the organization has raised money to install 18 new cement tee pads on the course. In addition, the players have spent considerable time helping clear brush, enhance walkways and more in the park.

“They do a tremendous amount of work up there in the park,” said Howard Faunce, director of the city’s public works department.

The popular league is open to all ages. Its Hasson Park course is among the top rated disc courses in the country.

City council members also approved the submission of an application to the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources for funding to upgrade the restroom facilities at the West End Marina.

“We have about six phases in our marina comprehensive plan and this is one,” said Kelly Amos Ryen, director of the city’s community development department. “We will have three primitive campsites open this year.”

Work at the marina site has included paving an unfinished section of the bike trail, preparing the campsites, installing picnic table pads and more.

The overall plan also calls for signage, fire rings, bike rack, map display and other amenities.

On another matter, council gave its formal approval for the Aug. 21 BridgeFest on Veterans Bridge. The bridge, according to a resolution adopted by council, will be restricted and closed to traffic on that day.
