Heil now full-time Cranberry manager; zoning officer named

Eric Heil, who has served as both interim township manager and zoning officer for Cranberry Township the past four months, is now the full-time township manager.

Heil was formally appointed to that position earlier this week, and Chad Berry has been appointed the new zoning officer.

Heil joined the township staff in June 2021 as zoning officer. Prior to that, he worked six years as a civilian employee for state police, and he was a member of the Franklin Police Department for 20 years before that.

Berry has been working for the township on the roads crew since October. Before that, he served as an Oil City firefighter.

“Chad had experience with zoning from doing code inspection for the Oil City Fire Department, so he was a natural fit,” said Heil.

As zoning officer, Berry will have a wide range of responsibilities.

“He will be the overall administrator of the zoning ordinance and how it is enforced and interpreted in the township,” said Heil.

Other responsibilities include being “a liaison between residents and the township on how they can best use their property to the fullest benefit,” said Heil.

The zoning officer is also responsible for the stormwater management ordinance and code enforcement, said Heil. “So they wear a lot of hats.”

Berry will be working 24 hours a week in the role of zoning officer and the rest of the week on the roads crew, said Heil.

“On paper, it is 24 hours a week (as zoning officer), but he will also be doing other functions, like road crew and maintenance — a little bit of everything,” Heil said.
