Glass plant to shut down 1 of 2 lines, lay off 108 people

ATLANTIC (AP) — A northwestern Pennsylvania glass plant has announced plans to shut down one of its two glass-making production lines, resulting in layoffs to more than 100 employees.

Vitro Automotive cited a number of factors in Friday’s announcement, including the downturn in the U.S. auto marketplace “worsened by the economic impact related to the global coronavirus outbreak.”

The company also said the line at the Greenwood Township plant near Meadville would require about $40 million to rebuild since it is nearing the end of its productive life.

Officials said the June 10 shutdown of the line will cut 90 hourly and 18 salaried worker from the plant’s 272-person workforce.

The plant, originally operated by PPG and later Pittsburgh Glass Works, was acquired by Vitro in 2017. Vitro shuttered PPG’s original glass plant in East Deer in 2018.
