Franklin students competing in national tourney

From staff reports

Ten students from Franklin High School are on their way to Orlando, Florida, to compete in the Academic Games League of America’s National Tournament this weekend.

Students have been participating in tournaments throughout the year to qualify for this national competition and honing their skills for many years.

Sam Burchfield, a senior, will be attending his third nationals and is looking for wins in the categories of Onsets, Equations and LinguiSHTIKS.

David Ferraro and Tyler Wood are juniors returning for their sixth time. Wood will compete in the math games, and Ferraro will look to regain his National Propaganda title from two years ago.

Qualifying for the first time are Christopher Bullard and Logan Burchfield, who hope to beat their personal bests in the cube games.

Freshmen who qualified include Alyssa Shick, Christina Bullard and Robbie Moffitt, and they are all veterans to the games.

Bullard will be looking to improve on her Propaganda and LinguiSHTIK scores, and Moffitt hopes to be undefeated in all three cube games. Shick, the top Propaganda student at the local and state levels, will be defending her title as the Propaganda reigning champion.

Eighth grader Carlito Motter will also seek the Propaganda title and be competing at the national level in presidents for the the first time.

Reston Weismann, who took a hiatus from the tournament last year, has returned and will compete in the math games.

The Knights will test their skills against students from seven other states Friday through Monday.
