Franklin students Rosie Ferraro and Alyssa Shick’s inter-district team took second place in the Propaganda competition at this year’s Academic Games Leagues of America National Tournament held in Atlanta.

Ten students from Franklin School District competed at the four-day, national event. The four Franklin players in the elementary division performed best in the Propaganda competition which tests the students’ knowledge of specific persuasion techniques. Shick received a medallion for her ninth-place finish in Propaganda in addition to her silver Thinker statue for being a member of the second-place team. Ferraro placed 25th out of 250 players in Propaganda competition, and other Franklin competitors Robbie Moffitt and Christina Bullard reached personal bests in this competition.

Shick also received a blue Thinker for winning fifth place in the Presidents competition with her team. Students competing in the Presidents competition must answer questions about former presidents of the United States. Shick scored in the top 25 percent of competitors in the Presidents competition.

Two Franklin Academic Games veterans competed in the middle division. David Ferraro and Tyler Wood were awarded a medallion for their seventh place team effort in Propaganda. Both boys also competed in Equations, Onsets, and LinguiSHTIK.

Trevor Wood, Adam Taylor, Kiaran Rios and Sam Burchfield represented Franklin in the junior division. This was Burchfield’s first Nationals tournament while Rios, Taylor, and Wood were competing in their second, fifth and seventh Nationals tournament, respectively.

Academic Games Nationals are a tradition at Franklin. Recent graduate and past Nationals competitor Michael Wisner aided his Franklin teammates for eight years, and now Wood and Taylor are carrying on his Nationals legacy by mentoring their younger teammates.
