Franklin parks recognized

From staff reports

HARRISBURG – Fountain and Bandstand parks in Franklin were recognized as a Great Public Space by the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Planning Association through its Great Places in Pennsylvania Program.

The program, which was launched in 2014, recognizes memorable places throughout Pennsylvania. Great Places have a sustainable vision for the future and serve as a model for other communities, according to the association.

All of the designated Great Places demonstrate the rewarding results that occur through community partnerships, planning and dedication.

A press release about the Franklin parks said they were envisioned in the 1795 urban plan for the city and border the main street in the heart of the city. Prominent features are the 1896 Egbert Memorial Fountain and the 1866 Civil War monument, as well as the bandstand where Franklin’s Silver Cornet Band has been playing for over 160 years. The parks are a popular place for relaxing, strolling, chess matches, and picnicking, as well as a hub for celebrations, festivals, and events that attract 175,000 visitors annually.
