Franklin man held for court on charges from crash, capture

From staff reports

A Franklin man facing several felony charges stemming from a one-vehicle crash in November and his subsequent apprehension in December was held for court Wednesday.

Jacob Hernan, 23, will now face further court proceedings in the cases.

Hernan was driving a vehicle on Rocky Grove Avenue on Nov. 7 when he failed to negotiate a slight left turn, Sugarcreek Borough police said. The vehicle left the road and struck a tree head on, according to police.

Hernan then crawled out of the vehicle with a bag containing methamphetamine, which he left in a wooded area, and left the scene on foot, police said.

He and his 17-year-old passenger were transported to UPMC Northwest to be treated for serious injuries, according to police, and he was later transferred to a hospital in Erie which he left the next day “against medical advice.”

Hernan was then located in a vehicle with two women at the Red Express on Pittsburgh Road on Dec. 22.

Police said before he exited the vehicle, Hernan took a black bag from around his waist and threw it into the back seat of the SUV.

The bag contained a baggie and plastic box, both containing marijuana, two cylindrical containers holding methamphetamine, $66 in cash and multiple items of drug paraphernalia, police said.

Charges against Hernan from the two cases include aggravated assault by vehicle while DUI, accidents involving death or injury while not licensed, accidents involving death or personal injury, manufacture, delivery or possession with intent to manufacture or deliver, corruption of minors, possession of a controlled substance and use/possession of drug paraphernalia.

Hernan remains lodged in the Venango County jail on $30,000 bail.
