Franklin man accused of assaulting officer

From staff reports

A Franklin man is facing charges after he allegedly assaulted a police officer around 9:45 p.m. Sunday at an Atlantic Avenue residence.

A criminal complaint filed through district judge Matthew Kirtland’s office said Franklin patrolman Sean Floor was dispatched to a residence at 234 Atlantic Ave. for a report of a threatening male.

Floor arrived and made contact with 39-year-old Kevin Whitman. Floor was advised Whitman was trying to injure his own family members, the complaint said.

Whitman charged at Floor and spit in his face, the complaint said. Floor tried to take Whitman into custody, and he became aggressive, attempting to head butt and spit on the patrolman, the complaint said.

Floor had to physically retrain Whitman to place him in the patrol unit, at which time Whitman kicked the vehicle windows and threatened to kill Floor and Whitman’s own family members, the complaint said.

Whitman is facing two felony counts of aggravated assault, two misdemeanor counts of terroristic threats and a misdemeanor count of resisting arrest.

He was arraigned before Kirtland and placed in the Venango County jail on $65,000 bail.

A preliminary hearing is tentatively scheduled May 16 in Central Court.
