Franklin July 4 events underway

Franklin’s 11-day 4th of July festivities began Thursday with a concert, and today’s schedule is highlighted by the popular penny carnival at Bandstand Park.

The Dempseytown Ramblers roused the patriotic partying with bluegrass music Thursday evening in front of a crowd at Bandstand Park.

The children’s penny carnival will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today, and the event will be spread out across Bandstand Park, Fountain Park and the 12th Street island.

There will be penny games, a petting zoo, a balloon artist, “fun with Kung fu” and Penny’s Candyland Game. A hot dog booth and ice cream stand will also be set up.

Marty’s bubble gum machine will be available from 11 a.m. to noon followed by the Jungle Terry Show from noon to 1 p.m. in Bandstand Park.

Franklin fire department and Franklin police will have vehicles parked in the 12th Street Island for the youngsters to see.

Two concerts will be held in Bandstand Park over the weekend with Dreamscape performing from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday and South 62 on the stage from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Sunday.

4th of July events will continue every day through Independence Day.
