Fire severely damages garage in Franklin

From staff reports

A garage at 608 Buffalo St. in Franklin sustained severe damage in a fire Wednesday.

Franklin firefighters responded to the scene at about 3:50 p.m., and fire chief James Wetzel said in a press release there was heavy fire and smoke showing from the detached garage behind the residence at 608 Buffalo when they arrived.

The fire was brought under control within 30 minutes and the garage was severely damaged, Wetzel said.

No injuries were reported.

The back of the residences at 608 Buffalo and 418 6th St. both sustained minor heat damage, and a vinyl fence between 608 and 614 Buffalo had severe heat damage, Wetzel added.

“It’s probably going to be a total loss,” Franklin fireman Lt. Dan Anderson said by telephone after department members returned to the station a little after 6 p.m. Anderson said the fire was contained within the garage.

Damage to the garage has been estimated at $90,000 for the structure and contents. The garage was owned by John A. Shaffer, who was home at the time of the fire, and the property is insured, Wetzel said.

Damage to the back of the residence at 608 Buffalo has been estimated at $2,500, and damage to the back of the residence at 418 6th was estimated at $10,000, Wetzel said. Damage to the vinyl fence was estimated at $2,500. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, according to Wetzel.

The Franklin Fire Department had three engines, 12 firefighters and Tower 9 at the scene. Franklin police and Community Ambulance Service assisted.
