FHS principal says there was no threat at school

From staff reports

Franklin state police said Monday that a reported threat Friday at Franklin Area High School wasn’t considered credible.

“It didn’t actually happen … there was no threat to student safety,” high school principal Christina Cohlhepp said Monday.

Cohlhepp said it appears the threat, which involved a knife, began as a rumor in the school and translated to social media, where it took on different details.

“It’s simply not true, they were just rumors,” Cohlhepp said. “Certainly if there were any viable threat we would have locked down the school and had law enforcement there,” she added.

State troopers were at the school Friday and Monday to “maintain a presence in a coordinated effort with the school police officer,” police said.

Cohlhepp said the district always “errs on the side of caution” and has worked together with police to investigate the incident.

Robocalls were issued by the district Friday morning and again Sunday night assuring parents there was no threat to student safety, Cohlhepp said.

“I recognize a lot of this comes from a place of caring…the parents are worried about the safety of their kids,” Cohlhepp said. “The only thing is I encourage parents if they have questions to call the school directly or the state police rather than look to social media as a source of news. Often times it does more harm than good.”
