Fall opening for Rural King; applications sought

Rural King Supply announced Wednesday its new store in Sugarcreek Towne Center on Allegheny Boulevard will open in the fall.

“We’re very, very pleased,” Sugarcreek Borough manager Joe Sporer said.

The store didn’t provide a set date for its opening but did say it is accepting employment applications on its website.

Rural King purchased the location for $2.4 million one month after what had been the most recent Kmart in the area closed its doors in April 2018.

In the nearly two years between the purchase of the building and when crews started up work in late February, the building remained vacant, something that caused many in the area to believe the building would be empty forever.

The farm store’s penchant for remaining mum on its plans for the building didn’t help things along much, but Sporer said this announcement couldn’t have come at a better time.

“You wonder if and you’re just kind of waiting and then it finally happens and it’s just like wow, I’m so glad for Sugarcreek Borough,” Sporer said.

In the current employment climate, Sporer said the fact the store is already hiring for the location provides a big boost for the morale of the community and puts Sugarcreek in “a good place.”

“We’re kind of just in this funk right now and for them to say they’re going to be here in the fall and that they’re hiring … it’s a big deal,” said Sporer.

The project, which lead engineering firm Allen Engineering Corp. of Decatur, Illinois, described in an earlier interview, runs a ballpark estimate of $218,595.

Allen Engineering said the store would be basically “gutted” to adhere to the average look of Rural King stores.

“It’s finally come to fruition,” said Sporer.
