Events set for people who need help with tax or rent rebates

From staff reports

State Rep. R. Lee James will sponsor two local events where people who need to file for property tax/rent rebates can get help filling out the necessary forms for financial relief.

The first opportunity will be from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday, March 18, at the Franklin VFW 411 Ninth St.

The second opportunity will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday, March 25, at the Oil City YWCA on Central Avenue.

To qualify for a property tax/rent rebate, applicants must be a Pennsylvania resident, age 65 or older, a widow or widower age 50 or older, or a person with permanent disabilities age 18 or older. Other requirements include homeowners who earn up to $35,000 annually or renters who earn up to $15,000 annually.

Participants should take with them documentation proving their age. Accepted options include birth certificate, driver’s license or PennDOT identification card, PACE or PACENET card, or Medicare Card.

Participants should also take rent or property taxes paid. For proof of taxes paid, receipted tax bills are required (no canceled checks) or a tax bill with a copy of the canceled check. For proof of rent, a rent certificate from the landlord or rent receipts signed by the landlord are required.

Proof of income for 2020 is also required.

“Last year was even more challenging financially than usual for many people given the COVID-19 closures, so my staff and I are pleased to offer residents help applying for the relief,” James said. “We especially encourage anyone who hasn’t filed before and isn’t comfortable doing so to reach out so we may assist.”

It isn’t necessary to RSVP to attend the events, but residents are encouraged to call the office at (814) 677-6413 with any questions.
