Drake Well to hold Arbor Day tree planting event

From staff reports

New trees will be planted Friday at Drake Well Museum and Park to celebrate Arbor Day.

The trees will be formally dedicated in memory of five individuals who made an impact on Pennsylvania’s oil and gas industry and its history.

The ceremony, held on the grounds of Drake Well Museum, will start with remarks at 2 p.m., followed by light refreshments.

The individuals being memorialized are William L. Huber, Daniel Joseph Leech, Samuel T. Pees, Russell L. Schetroma and Ellsworth E. “Pete” Sparks.

Each person was involved in different aspects of the petroleum and gas industry in Pennsylvania, especially in its historical preservation and interpretation.

The trees being planted are all native to Pennsylvania and include an eastern hemlock (dedicated to Huber), two sugar maples (dedicated to Leech and Schetroma) and two spring snow crabapples (dedicated to Pees and Sparks).

The Petroleum History Institute, Friends of Drake Well and Drake Well Museum and Park are co-hosting the event, which is open to the public.

Those interested in attending are encouraged to contact Emily Weaver, executive director of Friends of Drake Well, at (814) 461-0008 or drakewell@verizon.net.
