Diocese says VC headmaster undergoing evaluation

From staff reports

The Diocese of Erie says the Rev. T. Shane Mathew, headmaster at Venango Catholic High School, is undergoing an evaluation following his court appearance last month in a DUI case.

The diocese issued a statement Saturday that says Mathew agreed to the evaluation at the request of Bishop Lawrence Persico “to determine the most appropriate course of action.”

The statement also says that Mathew’s “future assignments and treatment will be decided when the evaluation is completed.”

Mathew waived a hearing on charges of DUI and careless driving on June 21 in Venango County Central Court. The charges were filed by Oil City police in connection with an April 21 incident.

Mathew, 38, was named Venango Catholic headmaster in August 2012 and recently completed his fifth school year at VC.

Persico “remains committed to supporting the needs of Venango Catholic High School,” the statement says.
