Cranberry Food Pantry will resume in-house distribution

The Cranberry Food Pantry is returning to in-house food distribution starting Monday.

COVID-related health directives prompted the shutdown, and the nonprofit organization switched to outdoor pick-up of groceries and other household items.

“We haven’t had people come inside since last spring and we were doing only drive-throughs,” food pantry director Janet Shaw said. “Now, we can have the doors open.”

The 13-year-old, nonprofit food bank, located on the ground floor of the former Cranberry High School on South Main Street, is open free to residents of Cranberry Area School District.

Founded by members of Cranberry area churches, the pantry and an adjacent clothes distribution center are staffed by volunteers.

The in-house food distributions will be held from 12:30 to 5 p.m. on the second and fourth Mondays of each month.

Advance sign-ups aren’t required, and individuals and families can register inside.

“There are no income guidelines and this is open to anyone within our school district,” said Shaw.

The clothes closet will be open during the in-house food distributions.

In addition, volunteers will hold an open house at the clothing center from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, March 25.

“Anyone who needs clothing is welcome to come and get what they need,” said Shaw.

The food pantry is stocked by Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest Pennsylvania. Private contributors also add a substantial amount to the collection of food and other items.

Individuals, organizations and businesses wishing to contribute food items, household goods or money to help fund the pantry may call (814) 673-4554 for additional information.

“And, we always need volunteers,” said Shaw. “Any time that they can give us would be great.”
