Cranberry committee discusses property near UPMC, broadband, mall

The Cranberry Economic Development Committee talked about some familiar topics — the property beside UPMC Northwest, broadband, and the Cranberry Mall — during the panel’s monthly meeting Tuesday.

Representatives of LIFE-NWPA told the committee last month they were considering building a new center in the area, and they wanted to know if the township was open to them building on a portion of the township property beside UPMC Northwest, which had previously been considered by the Hudson Group.

During Tuesday’s meeting, Susan Williams, president of the Venango Area Chamber of Commerce, told the committee that LIFE-NWPA has chosen a location in Oil City for its new facility.

The committee agreed it is good that LIFE-NWPA found a space that works for them, and that they, as a committee, still want to find a developer to build senior housing on the property beside the hospital.

Township manager Eric Heil said he would look into sharing on online forums about the committee’s search for a developer.

In other business at the meeting, township supervisor Matt McSparren said the township is working toward establishing Kohen Law Group of Pittsburgh as its consultant in bringing broadband to the area.

He said the township had a conference call with Kohen Law Group last week and that Kohen would like to meet with them again, and bring Venango County into the collaboration as well.

McSparen also said the Kohen Group would like to hold a public hearing to discuss bringing broadband to the township.

The committee talked about the possibility of doing another survey to discover how much need there is in the township for broadband, and where the need is greatest.

And in another matter, Cranberry Mall property manager Jeff Clark told the committee a new tenant is coming to the mall.

The tenant is Chiller Night Escape Experience, by Bryan Hogue, which will offer escape rooms, horror theater, and more. It is expected to open this summer.
