Clarion University joins ‘It’s On Us’ campaign

CLARION – Clarion University pledged Tuesday to join the “It’s On Us” campaign in a national effort spearheaded by Vice President Joe Biden.

Biden, in an effort to end violence against women, wrote the Violence Against Women Act in 1994. His latest endeavor, a campaign called “It’s On Us”, seeks to end the epidemic of sexual assault on college campuses nationwide.

Biden visited the University of Pittsburgh on Tuesday to talk more on the subject.

“Clarion University is deeply committed to ensuring, to the greatest extent possible, the safety of every Clarion University student,” university president Karen Whitney said in a press release.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and Clarion University, by signing the pledge, has vowed to improve awareness, prevention, reporting and response systems, and reducing the barriers that might prevent survivor from seeking help.

Sexual violence is the most prevalent and underreported crime at colleges and universities, affecting nearly one in five women and one in 20 men during their time at college. Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students are even more likely to experience harassment and violence on campus and less likely to report it.

“The ‘It’s On Us’ campaign is a national campaign that we wholeheartedly join to prevent sexual assault,” Whitney said in the press release.
