A Crawford County man is facing charges after he allegedly broke into the Galloway Church in September.

A criminal complaint filed through District Judge Patrick Lowrey’s office said Sugarcreek Borough police responded on Sept. 19 to the Galloway Church for a reported break-in.

Police observed a broken window to the secretary’s office, pry marks around a locked desk drawer and pry marks around the doors of other offices, the complaint said.

People belonging to the church told police they believed there were no signs of the break-in around 5:30 p.m. Sept. 18, when they left for the day, the complaint said.

A trooper with the Pennsylvania State Police Forensic Investigations Unit was brought in to recover latent prints, which were then sent to the Erie crime lab to be processed, the complaint said.

A positive identification was made for 25-year-old Joshua Garbowsky, of Centerville, who was not previously known to church employees, the complaint said.

Garbowsky was interviewed by police Tuesday and said he had never been to the church, the complaint said.

Fingerprints at the scene confirm he was in the church and did handle a piece of glass that was broken during the burglary, the complaint said.

Garbowsky is facing a felony count of burglary and misdemeanor counts of criminal mischief, theft by unlawful taking and institutional vandalism of a place of worship.

He was arraigned before Lowrey and placed in the Venango County jail on $50,000 bail.

A preliminary hearing is tentatively set for Jan. 3 in Central Court.
