Bad news, good news

Jackman, the blind Jack Russell, receives disappointing news. Tri-County Animal Rescue is reminding folks to spay and neuter their pets. Precious Paws Animal Rescue is looking for a few items.

Open your heart

Jackman
Regina Martin, founder of Hog Heaven Rescue in Cochranton and former humane society police officer, provided an update on blind canine Jackman.

Martin took the 7-year-old Jack Russell, who is suffering from bilateral mature cataracts, to a specialty hospital in Pittsburgh this week to meet an eye specialist.

“After his initial exam, I left him for a sonogram. That is how they check to see if the retina is good to repair the lens. The news is not good,” Martin posted on Facebook.

“Jackman’s retina’s did  no respond to the light at all. The graph was flat lined.  So, he is NOT a candidate for surgery,” the post continued. “So, now what we need is a forever home for this sweet little guy.”

She said Jackman does get around —  he runs into things — but does follow the voice.

“He is housebroken if you take him out regularly. He loves to cuddle and gets along with other dogs,” she posted. “Please don’t let his blindness stop you from opening your heart and your home to this sweet guy.”

Jackman
“As disappointed as I am with Jackman’s outcome, I know in my heart we will find him the perfect home,” she posted.

She will also be changing the fundraising amount since Jackman is not a candidate for surgery.

“We will need the $700 that was spent on him today. Thanks to all that have already donated. We only have $450 to go,” she posted earlier this week.

Donations can be made through a gofundme account and a youcare account for Jack. People may also donate through Paypay for the Venango County Humane Society. To donate through gofundme and youcare people may search for “help Jackman see.” Folks can also send their donations to the humane society with Jackman in the memo.

Up for adoption

Meanwhile, the Venango County Humane Society in Seneca has Fly Girl and Charger available for adoption.

Fly Girl

Fly Girl

Fly Girl, a domestic short hair, is a 1-year-old spayed female. Her soft white coat has a spot of gray above her right eye. She has a round head with a short muzzle and a pink nose.

“Fly Girl needs a quiet home. She’s shy at first but rather friendly once she gets to know you,” the society posted in a PetFinder listing.

Charger

Charger

Charger, a terrier mix, is a 6-year-old neutered male. He has a tan and white coat and big brown eyes.

“Charger is energetic, inquisitive and playful. He’ll enjoy a moderate walk on leash as well as off-lead outings in a safe area. Charger will be happiest living in the house and playing in the yard,” the shelter posted in a PetFinder listing.

Additional information on his background is available at the counter at the humane society.

Adoption fee changes

The society also posted on Facebook some changes in its adoption fees that went into effect this week. New prices will be as follows:

  • Dogs – $75
  • Puppies (6 months and under) – $100
  • Cats – $40
  • Kittens (6 months and under) – $50
  • The adoption fee for all pets includes spay/neuter, distemper vaccine, 1-year rabies vaccine, deworming, flea treatment and microchip.

The humane society is open from noon to 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. It is located at 286 S. Main St., Seneca. More information on the Venango County Humane Society is available by calling (814) 677-4040.

Tis the season … to spay and neuter

Tri-County Animal Rescue Center in Shippenville would like to remind community pet owners to spay or neuter their pets.

“Facebook posts are already popping up about litters needing homes and our rescue center, as well as other area rescues/shelters, will soon be overrun with these very litters. While Tri-County and most area shelters are no-kill, these avoidable litters leave a strain on shelters’ budgets and cause us to turn away other animals in need,” the shelter said. “Help us help our local animals and sign up for one of our clinics today.”

The center’s next two clinics are scheduled for Thursday, March 16, and Thursday, April 13.

“We would love to fill every slot! We can send unlimited male cats but the other slots are filled in the order applications and payments are received,” the center said.

Details can be found by searching “spay neuter clinic” on Tri-County’s Facebook page or calling (814) 918-2032 for more information.

“We have also partnered with Clarion Animal Hospital to help low-income pet owners,” the shelter said.

Applications for this program are available by stopping at the center or calling to have one mailed to people’s homes.

Available for adoption

Landon

Landon

Meanwhile, Landon and Rex are looking for their forever homes.

Landon has been in and out of TCAR twice, but that doesn’t get this sweet guy down!  He came as a kitten, was adopted and lived with his family for a couple of years.  Then back Landon came, was adopted again, but was returned due to the owners’ unexpected health issues.  He is declawed, neutered and is up-to-date on vaccines.

“Why not give lovable Landon a forever home so he knows the third time’s a charm?” the center said.

Rex

Rex

Head-boinking Rex is 3-4 years old, is neutered, current on vaccines, negative for leukemia, FIV and heartworms, which means Rex is one healthy Tom!  Stop by TCAR today and check out super affectionate, head boinking Rex!

The center also has a Hoppy Easter event planned from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 1, at Tractor Supply in Clarion. The event will feature pictures with the Easter bunny, baked goods, raffles and more.

Tri-County is located at 9562 Route 322, Shippenville. More information about Tri-County Animal Rescue Center is available on its Facebook page, by calling (814) 918-2032 or emailing contactus@Tricounty-arc.org.

Making a list

While Precious Paws Animal Rescue in Franklin received a generous donation from the folks at Dollar General on Valentine’s Day, the rescue could still use a few items.

Theresa Weldon posted that the rescue could use the following items:

  • Any old crockpots, electric skillets, serving dishes/utensils – The volunteers could use them when they make food for barn hunt trials.
  • Donations of items for our upcoming craft show – new items, wine or liquor, lottery tickets, gift cards, wicker baskets, tickets to events
  • High quality used items for an upcoming flea market event
  • Scoopable cat litter and dry cat food.
  • Dog beds, comforters, stainless steel bowls, collars and leashes and outdoor kennel panels
  • Laundry detergent, antibacterial soap, paper towels, Simple Green

Meanwhile, Weldon also posted about the donations from Dollar General.

“They did a donation drive for us and look at all the wonderful treats, food, litter and toys! Woo hoo! Thank you so much for this unexpected show of love and support this Valentine’s Day,” Weldon posted.

Think spring

Thirty-four vendors have signed up for the rescue’s Spring Craft Fair. The fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 25, at the Rocky Grove fire hall in Franklin.

The fair features crafters and home-based business vendors. It also includes food, raffle baskets, a 50-50 drawing, a pet photographer, baked goods and more. This is a dog-friendly event. Anyone who takes a bag of dog or cat food, cat litter, a cleaning product or gives a donation will receive a ticket for a chance to win a door prize.

The event benefits Precious Paws Animal Rescue, the Oscar Fund and the Spay Neuter Your Pet program. The vendor fee is $25 per table. More information is available by contacting PPAR at (814) 671-9827 or Jamie at (814) 549-0421 or hunsberger.jamielouise@gmail.com.

Flounder

Flounder

Theresa Weldon posted about Flounder, the cat, on the group’s Facebook page.

“Flounder spent Valentine’s Day with us at SNYP but he’s sad that not one person responded to his ad for a long term relationship. Someone please give this guy a loving home. He’s been waiting too long,” she posted.

Helping him breathe easy

John

John

Safehaven Small Breed Rescue in Tionesta reported that earlier this month one of their resident’s was having a “ruff” time of it.

“Our little man John has had a rough day. Not sure if it was the change in the weather or what but he had a hard time breathing again,” the rescue posted on its Facebook page. “John suffers from collapsing trachea, which is a common syndrome in middle-aged and elderly small dogs. In the syndrome, the structures that support the wind pipe, or trachea, weaken. This causes the trachea to narrow during the course of respiration, leading to irritation of the wind pipe and coughing.”

The rescue then posted on Feb. 8 that “Lil John is soundly sleeping, no coughing or straining to breathe. He ate a great big brunch and has decided that an afternoon nap was mandatory. I am beyond happy and so relieved that this little man can breathe easy today.”

Meanwhile, appointments have been made for John and another resident Haley.

Donations for Haley and John’s cardiology work can be made through paypal: safehavensbr@gmail.com, our website safehavensmallbreedrescue.org, or by mail to Safehaven SBR, 318 Barber Drive, Tionesta PA 16353.
