Nobody was injured after a fire broke out at about 5 p.m. Thursday in a third-floor apartment above Billy’s bar in Oil City.

Oil City Fire Chief Mark Hicks said the fire was caused by an overloaded extension cord to a space heater.

Three firefighters were able to put out the fire with a water bucket shortly after they entered the room, Hicks said.

Hicks said there was heavy smoke damage and moderate fire damage to the apartment, leaving the tenant displaced. The tenant wasn’t home when the fire started.

All other residents in the apartments above Billy’s were able to return to their rooms.

“The guys did an incredible job. The downtown fires with the older buildings can be hard to put out,” Hicks said.

“The fire department showed up extremely quick,” Bill Hadley, owner of Billy’s and the apartments above, said. “They contained it right away, to one small room.”

“I can’t thank those guys enough. Look at what they were able to do,” Hadley said.

Oil City police blocked off Seneca and Elm streets from Center to Duncomb streets for about an hour while firefighters cleared the scene.

Seneca volunteer firefighters assisted along with Oil City police and Community Ambulance Service.
