2 face preliminary hearings on charges that include robbery

From staff reports

Preliminary hearings are scheduled Wednesday morning for two men charged in a robbery last weekend near 33 Venango St. in Franklin.

Sugarcreek Borough police arrested Marquise McCool, 26, of Franklin, and Devonte Riedel, 26, of Oil City, after a man reported the two took $150 from him at gunpoint while he was in a car with them at about 1 a.m. May 25.

A criminal complaint filed by Sugarcreek police said the man had contacted McCool, who agreed to give him a ride. Once in the vehicle, the man told police McCool pointed a gun at him and told him to hand over his wallet.

The man said McCool didn’t take his wallet but did take $150. The man then left the vehicle, the complaint said.

Police located the vehicle in the Sheetz parking lot on Allegheny Boulevard.

Police said McCool was loud and upset, insisting there was no gun in the car, but police found a revolver stuck between the driver’s seat and the center console, the complaint said.

The complaint said neither Riedel or McCool possess a valid license to carry firearms.

Both McCool and Riedel were charged with felony counts of aggravated assault, firearms not to be carried without a license and conspiracy to commit robbery, as well as a misdemeanor count of recklessly endangering another person.

Both men were placed in the Venango County jail with bail set at $50,000.

Preliminary hearings will be held at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday in Central Court.
